Key Facts

  • Project: Coroglen - Kaimarama 66kV Reconductor
  • Client: Powerco Ltd
  • Location: Coromandel
  • Contract value: NZ$900k

DESCRIPTION

Powerco inherited the above 66kV line from the NZED some 30 years ago, this line was constructed in 1956 and was the sole source of supply for Whitianga and a large part of the Coromandel Peninsula up until the completion of the new 110kV
line Electrix constructed recently. With the new line providing a parallel back up circuit Powerco awarded Electrix the contract to upgrade the old structures and reconductor the 10km line section. This only became possible once the new circuit was commissioned as no power outages were required to upgrade the original line.

SCOPE

A total of thirty pole structures were replaced with concrete poles as part of this project, many with double back-to-back poles. The poles ranged in height from 11metres to 15 metres and some had challenging access in the rolling terrain. Eighteen structures had the existing cross-arms removed and replaced with steel cross arms. A number of structures had guys and deadmen installed or replaced. The steel wire fences in close proximity to poles had wooden panels fitted to stop potential step and touch issues. Truck mounted cranes some with 4 x 4 capability were used to access the pole structure sites, the poles were delivered to site using the same crane trucks specially fitted with pole racks.

The ACSR "Mink" conductor was removed using tension stringing equipment and replaced with ACCC “Krypton“, this work was undertaken in two separate runs one over 6 kilometres in length and the other 3 kilometres. All roads and power line crossing had hurdles erected complete with nets to protect the various assets and the general public from potentially falling conductors.

Landowner satisfaction was very important to Powerco as they had spent a considerable time brokering access to undertake this work, all sites had before and after photographs taken to confirm the condition of all infrastructure before and after the work. Electrix had a dedicated Land Owner Liaison Officer on this project to ensure all and any landowner issues were addressed as an ongoing exercise.

VALUE TO CLIENT

Electrix worked with Edison throughout this project and the relationship established on previous Powerco works was once again enhanced during the project. The work was completed on time and the client now has a double circuit 66kV line supplying Whitianga and the Coromandel which achieves the objective to ensure the holiday resort does not have unwanted power shut downs particularly at the critical seasonal times.
